All prisoners of Lincoln Castle were kept in strict isolation. The Victorians believed in an isolating regime that kept prisoners apart from the corrupting influence of their fellow prisoners. This also included the daily church service. Each prisoner was put in one of these wooden boxes. From inside the box they can only see the preacher in front of them.
