View from a pavilion below the Niederwalddenkmal over the river Rhine
Niederwalddenkmal
View over Rüdesheim, vineyards and the river Rhine. On the left you can see in the distance the cable cars connecting the city of Rüdesheim with the Niederwalddenkmal.
The foundation of the Niederwalddenkmal was laid on September 16, 1877 by the German emperor Wilhelm I. The 38 meter high monument with the 10.5 meter statue of "Germania" symbolize the "Wacht am Rhein" (poem by Max Schneckenburger which might be translated with "Watch on the Rhine") and remember the restoration of the German Empire directly after the Franco-Prussian War.

The main relief of the Niederwalddenkmal shows emperor Wilhelm the Great together with princes, dukes and some soldiers. Below you can find the text of the song "Wacht am Rhein" (= "The Watch on the Rhine") from Max Schneckenburger.
