The Pantheon is one of the great spiritual buildings of the world. It was built as a Roman temple and later consecrated as a Catholic Church. Its monumental porch originally faced a rectangular colonnaded temple courtyard and now enfronts the smaller Piazza della Rotonda. Through great bronze doors, one enters one great circular room. The interior volume is a cylinder above which rises the hemispherical dome. Opposite the door is a recessed semicircular apse, and on each side are three additional recesses, alternately rectangular and semicircular, separated from the space under the dome by paired monolithic columns. The only natural light enters through an unglazed oculus at the center of the dome and through the bronze doors to the portico. As the sun moves, striking patterns of light illuminate the walls and floors of porphyry, granite and yellow marbles. (Source: Great Buildings Online)

Bishop Kilian and his two companions came to Würzburg as missionaries around the year 686. They played an important role in the Christianisation of Franconia. They were killed in 689 under uncertain circumstances. Bishop Kilian is the patron saint of Franconia.
The southern wing of the Würzburg Residenz houses the palace church. Architect Balthasar Neumann wanted to preserve his idea of harmony in the baroque facade. Therefore he kept the arrangement of windows and used columns in the interior of the church to detract the viewer’s eye from the architectural pattern.

The exorbitant baroque decoration of the palace church of the Würzburg Residence makes it almost impossible to distinguish between downside and upside.

Sultan Ahmed Mosque or Blue Mosque by night
Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii)
Interior of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii). The most important element in the interior of the mosque is the mihrab, which is made of finely carved and sculptured marble, the adjacent walls sheathed in ceramic tiles. To the right of the mihrab is the mimber, or pulpit, where the Imam stands when he is delivering his sermon at the time of noon prayer on Fridays or on holy days. The mosque has been designed so that even when it is at its most crowded, everyone in the mosque can see and hear the Imam.
At its lower levels the interior of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii) is lined with more than 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles, made at Iznik (the ancient Nicaea). Its upper levels are painted. More than 200 stained glass windows with intricate designs admit natural light, today assisted by chandeliers. The decorations include verses from the Holy Koran, many of them made by Seyyid Kasim Gubari, regarded as the greatest calligrapher of his time.

Altar in the cathedral Saint Salvator and Boniface of Fulda.

Prince abbot Adalbert von Schleifras assigned the planning of a new cathedral to Johann Dientzenhofer. The old Ratgarbasilica (formery the largest basilica north of the Alps) was taken down before construction of the new building began in 1704. Parts of the foundations of the old church were used again. The baroque masterpiece was consecrated on August 15, 1712.

"Imperial Cathedral" or Kaiserdom in Aachen
The cathedral obtained its present shape in the course of more than a millennium. The core of the Aachen cathedral is the Palatine Chapel; being surprisingly small in comparison to the later additions, at the time of its construction it was the largest dome north of the Alps. Its fascinating architecture with Classical, Byzantine and Germanic-Franconian elements is the essence of a monumental building of great importance: for 600 years, from 936 to 1531, the Aachen cathedral was the church of coronation for 30 emperors of the Holy Roman Empire.

The small chapel in Glendalough is often called St. Kevin's Kitchen because of its small tower looking like a chimney. The heavy stone roof protected the chapel over the centuries and left it as the only building of the monastery intact.

Over the main altar of St. Peter's Basilica stands a 30 metres (98 ft) tall baldachin held by four immense pillars, all designed by Bernini between 1624 and 1632. The baldachin was built to fill the space beneath the cupola, and it is said that the bronze used to make it was taken from the Pantheon.
